Sometime first week of June, 2009, when out driving between a meeting and counseling, there was a call from home saying the ABC Television team was waiting and with them was my dear Deaf Dancer friend Muna Gurung. After 35 minutes and some rescheduling, I was home. What was it about?
What about make-up? One of the Hearing Dance trainers in our team, young Sagar Khadga's mother is a professional beautician/make-up artist. This wonderfully kind lady volunteered to come with her assistant.
Two days before the ABC shoot we were training feverishly. In no time, Friday, June 12 was there right before us. And we too were all there, ready!
The ABC team was scheduled to arrive by 2:30pm. Now it was 3:30pm. I called up Samir. He said an important event had come up, it needed priority coverage and they were just unable to come away and what's more they were at the other end of town!
It was devastating news. I could not muster the courage to break it to my team. But yes, it was possible to talk to Samir and I am one with faith in the power of persistence and patience.
I called Samir again and described the elaborate preparations, the 'colorful and first time in the country' show this would finally become and if I was in his shoes, I would never want to miss an opportunity like this! He said it may get late. How late? I suggested that as long as he got here at least an hour before sunset, we can make it.
Well, Samir Joshi did come. Yes, it was very late but not too late. The shoot happened. He was visibly happy he did not miss it. The Deaf Dance team performed and even sat through interview questions thrown in by Samir.
It was an afternoon to remember. Slowly darkness descended while we all again assembled in the patio. Soon it was time to say goodbye.
The Yeti Travels Hiace van was there waiting to take everyone back home..... dreaming of playing audience to ourselves on ABC television.... watching ourselves dance Ballroom dances.... in step and style to music unheard! No wonder we call it Dance Without Music.... an exclusively Deaf Experience!!
SAMIR JOSHI, thank you for your interest and time.
ISEEITFIRST, thank you for such professional handling of the ladies wardrobe.
YETI TRAVELS, thank you for the touch of comfort and security in your Hiace van, gifting peace of mind to otherwise anxious parents & guardians
